I would have preferred to have been camping somewhere secluded with excellent views and no distractions. However, our summers are dictated by the wildland fire season and we simply have to make the most of the time we have. Mtn Papa was working late yesterday so instead of bailing, we decided to embrace the opportunity. Nothing happens when you wait around for the perfect situation to come together. Nothing.
And while we are being honest.... I figured this Mama would be MUCH too tempted to sneak back in her bed when the going got rough (AKA Mr. Horrible Sleeper not sleeping.)
It went much better than I expected.

Ready to head out to the backyard |
The boys busted our their LEGO headlamps, we roasted S'mores with the neighbors, played in the sand and water and stayed up much too late checking out the stars.

Sleeping well in the tent |
I thought a lot about how it's so easy to get caught up in the BIG adventures. It's SO easy to forget how even just nights like this past one mean so much to the kids, to our family. While we certainly want to make more memories as a family doing the "big stuff", the little stuff is ok too. Plus, it's great practice!
I want to know! Did you camp out this weekend? Did you head out of town or stay in your own back yard? How did it go? As always, feel free to share photos on our Facebook page and leave comments here!
Yay - so glad you decided to go for it! We did, too, and the kids had a great time. We kept it really low-key (just us, no friends) and treated it like a dry run for the road trip camping we'll be doing later this summer. It was a lot of fun, though my back was super sore the next morning. Guess I'm getting old!
ReplyDeleteYou bet it's camping! We camped out this weekend too. The boys had fun.
ReplyDeleteWe actually camped in our backyard as well!! We've had a very eventful last two weeks, so we needed a nice, calm and hassle-free night out under the stars :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for all your inspiring posts. I’ve nominated you for an “Versatile Blogger Award”. http://wp.me/p1ow8m-86
ReplyDeleteisa and phil went big and it was her first time carrying some of her weight (a few snacks, a layer, her toothbrush, and her stuffed animal!) and really backpacking, with no pack animals and no car to return to. they had a blast!
ReplyDeletewe went back up into the Winds for a picnic dinner tonight and came home with the same sentiment... that we want these type things, big or small, to just be the norm. we realize that not every adventure has to be huge and not every outing needs to be a first, but that getting out is what we are going for, even if we're not breaking records :)
