Outdoor Loving...

This week Mtn Papa and I celebrate 4 years of marriage.

Yes, I know, maybe that sounds like we are still in the "baby stages" of marriage to some of you, but we're pretty proud of it (and looking forward to many more years together!)

I was thinking lately how much our time in the outdoors strengthens our communication and relationship in general.  So far, our kids usually fall asleep during some point of our adventure (hiking or skiing) and we finally (finally!) get a chance to talk uninterrupted (by children, work, or jobs around the home.)

We easily discuss topics that are not at all related to the beauty we are experiencing - finances, parenting, our other friendships, family, our health, and our hobbies.

Misunderstandings and disagreements are best solved while we are moving outdoors.  We are more generous, more giving, more serving of each other.  Maybe it is the fresh air??  Maybe we are just more in tune with each other, our bodies and God because nothing else at that moment matters.

Our adventures, our challenges, our successes are good for our marriage, for our family.

This week I challenge you to spend a little time outdoors with your spouse.  Work in the garden, go on a walk, take a hike, a ski or take the first camping trip of the year!

Make your family first, starting with the one you chose to love first!

  1. I agree completely. Spending time outdoors gives me a sense of well-being and I feel I relate to others better because I am not as stressed. Happy Anniversary!! You know in Hollywood years, 4 years of marriage is like 50 years. ;)

  2. Awe first off, Happy Anniversary! I ay every year is important and special in its own. Me and my hubby have been together for a long time but usually it is me and the kids, dad is working. It sounds like I need to push him to get out with us more. I hope you have a wonderful week and may God bless you with a long and happy marriage.

    1. Thanks so much! And yes, maybe a little nudge in his direction anyway :) But, good for you for doing what works for your family!

  3. Happy Anniversary! Congratulations and best wishes. You're so right about the outdoors. I know that with my husband and myself getting outside puts us in a happy place from which we are more likely to actually listen to each other and understand each other. We are less "locked in" to our own opinions and are open to looking outside the box for solutions or to make sacrifices for the greater good.

    1. And isn't marriage ALL about going outside the box and sacrifices?!?!? :) Great thoughts, Suzi!
