It is suddenly that time of year in the Wyoming mountains. The days are getting longer, the temperatures are a bit warmer, the snow is getting softer and the sun is intense. We had a chance to get out and play yesterday and it was absolutely beautiful.
It was also one of those days where it took us hours to get out of the house and on the snow, so we were definitely battling sticky snow on our skis. But, we hardly noticed because we were enjoying the sun so much. So much, in fact, that we completely forgot about any sort of sun screen. We were lucky that we came home with a bit of color and luckily no noticeable burns.... This time.
I thought it was a really good time for a healthy reminder of the dangers of the sun, especially out in the spring/winter (though really sunburns happen in any season). The glare from the whiteness of the snow reflects enough to cause a nasty burn and makes sunglasses an absolute must, even for the youngest of adventurers. Additionally, because of the thinner atmosphere at a higher altitude, UV radiation is more intense up here in the mountains. And just like anywhere, don't be fooled by cloudy days - you can still get burnt! I have had my worst burns from skiing (much worse than from time at the beach!)
So, here's a reminder to US (because we are working hard to be better about it!) and to you! Cover up, wear sunscreen and put sunglasses on your kids AND yourself!!!
Just a note too: For kids, we love Julbo and Baby Banz sunglasses. They seem to be the best out there (at least in our opinion!)
Thanks for the reminder - I use a sunscreen moisturizer ever day but often forget about my son :( I'm a bad mommy.
ReplyDeleteSOOO easy to forget it! I am horribly guilty of that!
DeleteI have babybanz for C, but she will not leave them on! She did good up until about 9 months.
ReplyDeleteSuzy, try those Julbos....they tend to stay on better!
